On September 24, 1975, 4-year-old Mika Cheesman and her mom were braving the crowds inside New York Penn Station. After wandering around a candy shop, Mika headed back into the station — only to find her mother completely gone, as if she vanished into thin air.
Mika was left there all alone until police found her. She ended up in an orphanage and was adopted by another family. Authorities named her “Missy” since no one knew her real name and no one came forward to claim her.
In 2001, Mika met a private investigator named Lynn-Marie Carty. Together, they spent the next 17 years trying to track down Mika’s biological family.
Meanwhile, everyone in that biological family was under the impression that Mika had died. They were told she fell out of the window of a New York City high-rise in 1975.
When a DNA test finally led to a first cousin, the stage was set for an epic family reunion, 40 years in the making.
In the emotional video below, Mika — who is now in her 40s and a mother of four — goes to Delaware to meet the family she hadn’t seen in four decades.
She also gets more heartbreaking insight as to why her mother left her at Penn Station.
