The holidays are an especially difficult time for military families, many of whom are sorely missing their moms or dads this time of year. This holiday, one military dad gave his son the best Christmas surprise he could dream of.
Sgt. Adam Powell of the US Army National Guard has been deployed in Jordan for the past year. That means he hasn’t seen his wife, Shanda, or his three young children in just as long.
Adam’s son, 8-year-old Alan Powell, wants to be “an army man” when he grows up, just like his father. Alan’s biggest wish for Christmas?
“I really want the army toy action figures,” Alan told WPMT.
But Adam’s gift to Alan was a serious step up from action figures. He gave Alan the real thing instead.
During a family visit to Santa Claus, Alan and his two younger siblings saw their dad in person for the first time all year. It was a Christmas wish come true.
“I saw the uniform of his pants,” Alan said. “I was like, ‘Who is that?’”
The surprise visit was a gift not only for Alan but also for Adam, who’s been deeply missing his family all year.
“My kids and my wife are everything to me,” Adam said. “So being home, being back, being reunited. It’s a great feeling. It’s a surreal ending to everything.”
